iMovie Streaming: Making QuickTime for the Web
by Tim Kennedy
February 5, 2001

If you have been following this series on basic video streaming using Apple’s iMovie, you are probably starting to get a little anxious. Learning how to use iMovie and editing your footage was fun. But you're probably wondering when we are actually going to get to putting your video on the Web. Today, your patience is rewarded. In the next articles, streaming your content will be the prime topic.

You've shot, digitized, and edited. Now it is time to export for online use.
And this is where there is an odd limitation with iMovie. As of version 2.0.1, iMovie is frustratingly incomplete in preparing your edited movie for use on the Web. It is the one major shortcoming with iMovie. After making it so darn easy to edit, iMovie leaves out simple but important details in how to get your material online. So in this article, I will walk you through how to output your edited iMovie video for use on the Web.

A streaming purist might suggest that the type of streaming I am covering in the next two articles is not really true streaming. Initially, I'll be using a technique called pseudo-streaming or progressive download. What does that mean to you the beginner? Not much. Do you have to worry about it? No. What all this means is that your video will stream from a Web server instead of full-featured streaming media server. True, it is not as efficient as traditional streaming. But if you wish to go that route, a future article will cover full streaming with RealNetworks' RealPlayer. So in this series of articles, you'll get the best of both worlds.
