Soundtrack Express: Music for Media (3)

Nathan: What formats do they need to send?

Drew: “Usually, the artist only needs to send a CD of their music. If they have WAVE files, we’ll take those, but it really doesn’t matter, because we can take those files and translate them into any other format.”

“We categorize all the music in-house for our users. A lot of producers don’t necessarily know music, so we kept things as simple as possible by creating marketing categories. So if they’re doing an automobile commercial, we’ve categorized music that would play well with this kind of commercial or we’ve categorized the music by visuals, etc. We also have a Search Engine that was also developed in-house.”

“In the next few days, were launching a new version of the site, which will be a little more fine-tuned. Through feedback from our clients, we try to make our Search Preview and Delivery processes as simple as possible. We make everything available to any desktop, so as long as you enter your passcode, you can download the music once you’ve purchased it.”

Nathan: How much music do you have in your database?

Drew: “Currently, we have thousands of tracks, but not all of it is up on the site. This is partly because we get a lot of music, so we have to sift through it, create the edits, post it and categorize it. We have to do a lot of back end administration before it actually goes up on the site.”

Nathan: What is the long-range plan for your company?

Drew: “We feel that we have the technology for the future. There will be no more figuring out who purchased what music and where and who’s using it. Everything will be accounted for. We will have tracking systems for all the music out there, so artists and performing rights organizations can figure out what the usage is and artists can be paid accordingly.”

“We also we see consumer applications for our technology. Right now, many people come to the site and really enjoy the music, so we have entertained some possibilities of moving into the consumer market. And we do have great music.”
