Soundtrack Express: Music for Media
by Nathan Segal
February 12, 2002

Soundtrack Express (STX) bills itself as “the number one destination site to get music for media.” Their purpose is to provide businesses and consumers with the tools to find, preview, manage, and purchase digital media, all within an easy to use interface.

Some of the features of Soundtrack Express include: advanced music technology, a fast media search engine, an instant streaming music preview system, a music tracking system, individual and blanket licensing schedules for all media clients, secure music, etc. The STX audio delivery system makes use of the Crystal Digital online audio delivery system, using equalization and compression algorithms, which compensate for the frequency loss which results from audio conversion to lower resolution formats.

According to a company press release, their MediaQUEST streaming audio player provides users with “the fastest and clearest audio experience available on the Internet.” Some of the features include: instant streaming CD quality audio, rapid fast forward, rewind and track scanning, seamless looping, key commands, “one-step” search and play technology and more. Drew De Risi Chief Operating Officer for the company, said: “We license our music catalog to media companies, from advertising to corporations, major networks, video game makers, video producers, documentary filmmakers, motion picture companies and to anyone who has an audio or music need. Our catalog offers music, loops, effects and more.”

Nathan: How do you obtain these different pieces of music?

Drew: “Most of the music is provided to us by the individual artist. We have a roster of artists that have submitted musical works to us for our catalog and to license out. In that sense, we’re a musical marketer for artists. We deliver music directly to the horses mouth, to people who actually going to use it for commercial purposes.”

Nathan: So your service is different from companies such as MP3.

Drew: “Exactly. We license music to commercial users. That doesn’t say that we’re not going to eventually provide a consumer orientated site, but for now, we’re mainly a commercial service.”
